7(c). Media/Publishing Issues: (Online) Blogging Boogies

google_mobileIf the content published online is found to be inappropriate or offensive such as remarks on racism, then whether blogging professionally or for personal can raise potentially unethical issues.

The information in online publications are constantly under public scrutiny. As publishing an article, photo, video or comments to a thread online are made accessible to anyone.

Take the case of Google. Google UK and its US headquarters was previously sued by Metropolitan International School for online defamatory. The school had accused Google of allowing a posting on a forum to be published.

The High Court judge who trialed the case declared that Google was only an innocent third party.  These reasons being Google was not the direct publisher of the information and thus, cannot be held liable or be penalized for defamatory resulted from the forum posting.

The High Court judge, Judge Eady, said victims of defamation should direct their complaint to the author who wrote and published the information.
